CST has in its staff a group of highly experienced design engineers and is in a position to develop the complete process from the conceptual phase of a machine to the Virtual Prototyping to finalize and make the virtual test of the designed equipment.


Optimization and modernization of existing designs

By adding the design capability to its field experience CST is in a position to improve the performance of existing machines: single operating machines or complete machinery production lines.

Typical examples of this activity are:

  • modifying existing machine components to overcome field operating problems or improve performance and reliability
  •  modernizing and uprating existing machinery lines to improve product competitivity  and performance

 

Design of new machines by Virtual Prototyping

CST has coupled the long standing experience of its design engineers with the most advanced and integrated computing means such as Virtual Prototyping and Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI). Virtual prototyping is a new machine design approach, which, starting from a 3D modeling, enables to simulate the complete machine and load it as a real physical object.
Main features of Virtual Prototyping are the following:

  • it integrates all the CAE tools, thus overcoming the limits existing when they are used separately, which causes neglecting the real mutual interactions between the machine components, moving away the simulation from the physical reality
  • it allows taking account of all physical, mechanical, thermodynamic characteristics, including the effects due to movements (e.g. inertia forces) and interaction between components and submitting the Virtual Prototype to loads and constraints replicating exactly those occurring during operation
  • the CAE tool integration includes also the material mechanical characterization for the infinite life fatigue analysis
  • it avoids  making a physical prototype with great savings
  • it allows a real optimization of the design, by fine-tuning it with subsequent runs of the virtual experiments in a short time
  • it allows “seeing” aspects that on a real prototype could not be seen: in fact the Virtual Prototype is “instrumented” in all its points
  • it allows repeating the experiment at a later time without major cost impact

By utilizing this design tool CST has developed the complete design of several new machines, starting from the conceptual phase up to the manufacturing specifications
